About Me

Welcome to my little corner of the interwebs.  My name is Katie.  I'm 35, single, and I teach middle school.  All of those things used to scare the heck out me, but none of them really do anymore.

I am a somewhat rabid consumer of entertainment.  I love music and will listen to pretty much anything once.  (Though Mexican death metal is out.)  To say that I am ecclectic doesn't seem nearly strong enough.  iTunes and my wallet have an intimate relationship and I'm always sharing my favorite new thing.  I have a DVD/BluRay collection that is outgrowing its space on my office wall (yes, the whole wall).  Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime may have slowed my collecting, but not my love of the binge.  My all-time favorite movie is Steel Magnolias, and my sister and I have been known to quote whole scenes.  (It's the only movie I am any good at quoting!)  I like all kinds of movies, but I don't watch horror movies because there is enough scary stuff in the real world and I was scarred by Stephen King's It at a slumber party in 7th grade.  (Clowns are scary enough without all that.)

I really do love my job, even though people shake their heads in disbelief when I say that.  I can't imagine teaching anything but 7th and 8th grades, and I will do it as long as I can keep my sense of humor.  It's possible this is part of the reason I 'm not sure about having kids of my own, however.  I teach American History, English/Language Arts, and Music Appreciation, as well as conduct the choir.  I'm also a very unlikely track coach, since lifelong runner is not exactly the first thing people think of upon meeting me.  But coaching track has become a real passion of mine, and I will do it for as long as they let me.

I love reruns of Gilmore Girls, dark chocolate, good books, and campy antiques.  More than anything, I want to be a good example of what it's like to follow God in a transparent way.  I'm about as flawed as they come, but I am thankful for a God who sees and knows, and loves me anyway.  And if He can love me, such as I am, I'm sure He loves you too.

On my blog, I share my opinion about pop culture, education, and the state of the world in general.  It's often the place where I recount embarrassing stories and talk about what it's like to be a single girl in a world that isn't quite sure what to do with me.  I mix my love of photography, movies, music, and Entertainment Weekly with real-life laughter, grief, amazement, and ultimately, hope.
